I recently built a new workbench with a front vise and a tail vise. i purchased some bench dogs to use with my new bench, but i’m not sure how to space the holes for the bench dogs. i’m reluctant to start drilling holes into my new bench without some advice regarding the appropriate spacing of. I also have a lie-nielsen twin screw as a front vise, and that also has dog holes 4 inches apart to coincide with it. i regret nothing using that spacing. i didn't want to crank my vises to hell and back just to use a particular dog hole, and the small space also keeps from running your vise out really far just to use the closest dog hole.. Completed my bench two months ago. attempted to locate the dog holes on 6 inch centers. since the dogs protrude below the bottom of the bench top you have to avoid the end vise and both top stretchers where the top is fastened which interrupted the spacing. in addition, the front vise also interfered with the regular spacing..
I drilled two 3/4″ holes in the jig on the drill press in one piece of 8/4 ash, spaced to equal the dog hole spacing for the bench. the second piece of 8/4 ash was glued on as a fence, the distance from the holes to the fence equalled the desired distance of the dog holes from the edge of the bench.. It's certainly possible, but a tool that depended on a specific hole spacing would have a very small market since there's no standard spacing. there's not even a standard shape for dog holes -- round is popular these days because it's easy to make round holes, but square bench dogs and holes are very traditional.. So many people ask me where to drill hole for their dogs on their new workbench. i'm an advocate for as few holes as possible at first and to add them as needed later. but where to start? here is.
